Sanctuary of Fátima

Fátima is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, located in central Portugal.

History

In 1917, three shepherd children — Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto — reported several apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Cova da Iria. These events occurred between May and October 1917. During the final apparition on October 13, thousands of people witnessed what became known as the “Miracle of the Sun.”

The Catholic Church officially recognized the apparitions in 1930, and Fátima gradually became a major international pilgrimage destination.

The Basilica

The main church is the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima, completed in 1953. It contains the tombs of the three shepherd children. Next to it stands the modern Basilica of the Holy Trinity, inaugurated in 2007, one of the largest Catholic churches in the world. At the center of the sanctuary is the Chapel of the Apparitions, built on the exact site where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared.

Today, millions of pilgrims visit Fátima every year, especially on May 13 and October 13, the main anniversary dates of the apparitions.
